At The Milestone Hotel & Residences, our commitment to environmental and social responsibility has a multifaceted approach, find out more about our holistic dedication to creating a positive impact on both the environment and the community below.

CLIMATE

milestone exterior

We are undertaking a number of different measures to reduce our carbon footprint at The Milestone Hotel & Residences. After a successful LED lighting update in the corridors and rooms throughout the hotel, we are continuing by updating all of our emergency lighting now in the hotel. LED lighting uses less than 80% of energy compared to the standard incandescent bulb. This alone will help reduce our carbon footprint due to the small amount of fossil fuels being burned in order to produce it.

Additionally, we have upgraded our tank storage to reduce our water storage from 16,000 litres to 9,300 litres and we have upgraded our taps with air rated tap connectors, which will cut down usage and wastage of water by 30% to 40% in the near future.

Currently, we have two partners for our electricity supply: Total Energies for our residences and Drax for our hotel rooms. Total Energies harnesses solar power to produce electricity and Drax produces electricity from burning wood pellets (biomass) - two sustainable and renewable suppliers.

FOOD

All our coffee grinds, raw fruit and vegetable trimmings are now being converted into compost via Winnow, a food waste solution technology. In 2022, we saved a total of 2.3 tonnes of food or the equivalent of 5,789 meals and 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Additionally, we are using nine organic suppliers and 11 local suppliers as of December 2021.

WASTE

Eliminating single-use plastics

We have removed 90% of single use plastic from our operations and some of the recent removals include:

  • Our welcome guest turn down amenities are completely plastic free from Floris
  • We now use plastic free coffee capsules which are 100% compostable
  • We now use a plant based zero waste ‘sellotape’ for wrapping guest gifts
  • We use biodegradable piping bags in our kitchen
  • Our coffee and tea sachets in guest rooms are covered with foil lining instead of plastic
  • Our maintenance team now use use velcro to tie cables, which are re-usable
  • We now use e-brochures instead of printed brochures and print our business cards on recycled paper
