The Art of Sabrage

We’ve become masters of enjoying Champagne at The Milestone and an experience that we’ve found adds to the occasion is sabrage. The art of Sabrage is a technique whereby a bottle of Champagne is opened with a sabre, a method which became popular in France during Napoleon’s reign. Napoleon is reported to have said “Champagne! In victory one deserves it, in defeat one needs it.”

There are many stories about this tradition and one of the more spirited tales is that of Madame Clicquot who had inherited her husband’s small Champagne house at the tender age of 27. She used to entertain Napoleon’s officers at her vineyard and, as they rode off in the early morning with their complimentary bottle of Champagne, they would open it with their sabre to impress the rich young widow.

The Art of Sabrage is certainly a tradition which we would like to keep alive. We’re fortunate to have had the opportunity to join the Confrérie du Sabre d’Or, an organisation that has continued through the years to promote this exuberant ritual.

We would be only too pleased to demonstrate the Art of Sabrage and share this great experience with our guests.
