World-class classical concerts, performances by international stars and colourful musical extravaganzas fill the Royal Albert Hall’s stage each year. It’s London’s premium live music venue, and is moments from The Milestone Hotel & Residences, offering guests easy access to an inspired line up of entertainment during their stay. Classical enthusiasts can enjoy the renowned BBC Proms from July, while the Hall’s upcoming contemporary offerings invite rock and pop fans to enjoy a memorable night out. Here, we select the not-to-be-missed Royal Albert Hall events taking place this summer.
The BBC Proms
“It’s shaping up to be a spectacular summer,” says Lucy Noble, Artistic Director of the Royal Albert Hall. “The BBC Proms lands in July, delivering two months of world-class classical music, including concerts that highlight climate change, mark Queen Victoria’s bicentennial, and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.”
One of the Royal Albert Hall’s event highlights, the BBC Proms is the world’s most celebrated classical music festival and has been hosted at the historic venue since 1941. The series spans eight weeks from 19th July, bringing together the industry’s most acclaimed musical heavyweights with rising stars and pioneers in the classical scene.
Contemporary musical talents
“The Hall’s rock and pop line-up is similarly exciting this summer, with a special event on 21st June commemorating the life and musical genius of late Buzzcocks founder Pete Shelley. Composer Nitin Sawhney revisits his acclaimed album Beyond Skin 20 years on 26th September, and performances from The Beach Boys [24th-25th June], Gladys Knight [26th-27th June] and King Crimson [18th–20th June] promise to be a great success,” continues Noble.
Toe-tapping dance events
Dancers of all abilities are invited to pick a partner for an afternoon of quicksteps, foxtrots and waltzes on a specially laid dance floor at the Hall’s Tea Dance on 12th July. Stay on a little longer to dance the Lindy hop, jive and jitterbug at the Royal Albert Hall’s Swing Dance event that evening. “These are our popular community events featuring our in-house musicians, Albert’s Big Band,” says Noble.
The Royal Albert Hall’s enthralling Films in Concert series returns in September, with Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back in Concert from 21st–23rd September. The second instalment of George Lucas’ classic trilogy will be projected in high definition for film buffs to revisit the acclaimed timeless classic. “The movie is screened in full, while John Williams’ legendary score is performed live on stage by the Philharmonic Orchestra,” affirms Noble.
