Explore geographical collections at the Royal Geographical Society

Event: Explore the UK's largest geographical collections
Date: Royal Geographical Society in Kensington

The Royal Geographical Society was established in 1830 with the goal of advancing geographical science and to provide support to its practitioners.

Nearly 180 years later and the UK stands as one of the world's leading nations in the field of geographic research.

Every year, more than 150,000 people attend events and activities held by the society, with many others coming to marvel at its various collections, which include around two million different items.

Cultural artefacts from around the world from over 500 years of geographic exploration call the society their home, including leopard's claws from the then Belgian Congo, Ernest Shackleton's Burberry helmet and oxygen tanks used to scale Everest.

Other interesting items include 150,000 bound volumes, 4,500 expedition reports, 800 journal titles, a map from 1842, several recordings of society lectures and various photographs and pictures.

For geography and history lovers, the Royal Geographical Society collections are a must see.

While in the capital, visitors will need somewhere to stay and there is nowhere more perfect to spend a weekend than at the luxury London hotel the Milestone.
