The Year of Magical Thinking

Event: The Year of Magical Thinking
Date: April 25th until May 20th 2008

Described as "one of the world's greatest living actresses", Vanessa Redgrave stars in new play by Joan Didion, The Year of Magical Thinking.

Based on Didion's memoir, Redgrave takes on the challenge of depicting a trying period in the author's life following the death of her husband.

Potentially of appeal to female travellers staying at luxury London hotel the Milestone, Redgrave portrays the mixture of emotions felt by Didion through observation and analysis.

Throughout the play, the sole female actress is haunted by details and questions in regards to the medical details of her husband's death.

She worries that he perhaps knew in advance of it happening and also ponders the ways in which she could have made his last moments more significant and important.

"Capturing the compassion, humour and bewilderment of a fiercely intelligent woman whose world lurches suddenly from the ordinary to the unimaginable [it] is a love letter to a child and a tribute to an extraordinary, unconventional marriage," a Broadway review states.

The show premieres at Lyttleton Theatre at the Southbank Centre in London this April following a long run on Broadway.
