London Town notes that the plot's "eccentricities" are given particular quality and character by the African retelling.

The story tells the tale of Prince Tamino and his subordinate Papageno who use a magic flute to help discover true love.

Portobello's rendition is full of energy and the "compelling" rhythms evoke tribal mythology, it is claimed.
