Category: Art & Culture Dates: Monday, 11 August 2014 to Sunday, 08 March 2015 Experience the work of one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century Few photographers can claim to be as prolific and influential as Horst P Horst, who turned the creative world upside down with his incredible photographs of interior architecture, still lifes, environmental portraits and women and fashion. It is towards the latter of these subjects that the V&A's latest exhibition Horst: Photographer of Style turns its attention towards. The latest display at the prestigious venue re-examines key aspects of the German-American creative's work, with a focus on the shoots he carried out for big name designers such as Chanel, Schiaparelli and Vionnet in the 1930s. Visitors can expect to see the man's most renowned images - stunning works such as Cashmere Lover, which portrays a woman standing atop a column in a dramatic pose, holding the wings of her dress aloft like a butterfly. Other pieces to watch out for include an exciting range of images originating from Vogue, published in the late 1930s and the early 1940s. These were, of course, his most productive years, during which time he created a trendsetting selection of seductive black and white images featuring cover girl Susanna Shaw. Also worth a look is his picture of Loretta Young, which became an immediate classic when it was featured in a special edition of the same magazine. But the exhibition is notable for its inclusion of a number of rarely seen images produced by Horst during his time in Europe in the 1950s and 1960s, when his fascination with escapism that dominated his works during the Second World War had faded. Whether you have an interest in style and photography, or just want to get acquainted with one of the great artists who changed the world forever, Horst: Photographer of Style is a fascinating display of work.
